$4.53 million federal investment to deliver major Ipswich bridge upgrade

A major infrastructure investment is heading to Ipswich, with the Australian Government committing $4.53 million towards the $5.67 million replacement of Strongs Road Bridge at Lanefield.

Announced on 16 October 2026 by the Hon Kristy McBain MP, Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories, the funding forms part of the latest round of the Safer Local Roads Infrastructure Program, delivering nearly $135 million towards road safety projects across Australia.

The Australian Government's contribution of $4,534,430 represents approximately 80 per cent of the project's total $5,668,037 value, supporting Ipswich City Council to deliver this important local infrastructure upgrade.

A safer, stronger bridge for Lanefield

The project will replace the existing ageing, three-span timber bridge on Strongs Road with a new, longer and wider precast concrete structure.

The current bridge measures 19.8 metres long and 4.2 metres wide, while the replacement will measure 42.25 metres long and 5.96 metres wide, providing a more durable two-way, single-lane crossing.

The upgrade will include:
- Construction of the new precast concrete bridge.
- Installation of bridge rails and wing walls.
- Scour protection to reduce erosion risks.
- Associated road pavement improvements.

The replacement is expected to improve safety, resilience and reliability for local residents, motorists and rural properties accessing the Lanefield area.

Federal investment supporting Ipswich's future

Previously identified in Ipswich City Council's Capital Works Program, the Strongs Road Bridge replacement is an important local infrastructure priority.

With Ipswich continuing to experience significant population growth, investment in safe and reliable transport infrastructure remains essential for connecting communities, supporting local businesses and strengthening regional accessibility.

The latest federal funding commitment represents another investment in the infrastructure needed to support the Ipswich region's long-term growth and development.
