2022-2023 October Budget

October 2022

The Treasurer, the Hon Dr Jim Chalmers MP brought down the 2022-23 October Budget. This budget includes a commitment to $1 billion worth of investment over 3 years in community programs to improve regional liveability.

The Federal Budget also provided more details of a new approach to regional infrastructure grants which aims to restore accountability, transparency and fairness to the Commonwealth’s investment in regional programs. There will be two new regional investment programs – the regional Precincts and Partnerships Program and the Growing Regions Program.

The regional Precincts and Partnerships Program will provide a strategic, nationally consistent mechanism for funding and coordinating larger-scale projects that transform a place, to benefit communities in regional cities and wider rural and regional Australia.

The Growing Regions Program (GRP) will provide new opportunities for regional local councils and not-for-profit organisations through an annual open, competitive grants process. The program is funded across 3 years starting.

Disaster Recovery Grants

October 2022

Queensland communities affected by devastating weather events last summer will benefit from $19.5 million in Flexible Funding Grants (FFGs) to drive recovery and resilience projects.

The grants are provided by the Australian and Queensland governments through Category C of the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

The grants are available to communities affected by the Central, Southern and Western Queensland Rainfall and Flooding (Nov – Dec 2021), Ex-Tropical Cyclone Seth (Dec 2021 – Jan 2022), south east Queensland Rainfall and Flooding (Feb – April 2022), and Southern Queensland Flooding (May 2022) events.

Minister King recently announced after the 2022 October Budget nothing that the Albanese Government is committing $1 billion over three years to two new regional programs.

Darling Downs-Moreton Rabbit Board

RDAIWM Chair Cr Janice Holstein, Council representatives, members from the AG sector, and the Hon Murray Watt, Senator, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries & Forestry and Emergency Management, visited the Lockyer Valley to discuss a range of issues such as flood recovery, restoration, and mitigation.

Janice also had the opportunity to address biosecurity and said, ” We’re immensely proud of the successes of the DDMRB (Darling Downs-Moreton Rabbit Board) in actively suppressing the number and impact of rabbits in our area.”

The Postmans Ridge Pioneer Memorial Hall

June 2022

Lockyer Valley Regional Council received funding from the Commonwealth Government for the Local Economic Recovery Funding program (LER) for $700,000 and Council contributed $100,000.

This grant funding was used for upgrades to 10 rural community halls with various works undertaken.

The Postmans Ridge Pioneer Memorial Hall received funding to construct a new toilet block with disabled access so the whole community would be able to take advantage of this community asset.

The Australian Government is delivering Jobs Fairs across the country and it was Ipswich’s turn on 27 October. The Ipswich Jobs Fairs brought together job seekers, employers and employment service providers in the local area.

The Ipswich Jobs Fair provided people with the chance to explore current employment opportunities in the local community.

Employers with current job vacancies were invited to attend free of charge as exhibitors. Job seekers had the opportunity to meet with these employers, find out first-hand about vacancies and what the job entails.

The Ipswich Jobs Fair was an opportunity for job seekers to meet face-to-face with employers and talk to them about real and current jobs, apprenticeships, training and career options in Ipswich and the surrounding regions.

Workshops also provided information and advice on how to improve people’s chances of getting a job. These included talking to a professional for résumé assistance, interview tips and job search techniques.

Greater Springfield Festival of Learning (2021)

RDA Ipswich & West Moreton were proud supporters of this year’s Greater Springfield Festival of Learning 2021. The Festival commenced on the pupil free day 3rd of September, with 600+ educators in the one room.

Learning about the power of collective creativity and innovation, the buzz and energy in the room was something to experience. Keynote speaker, 5-time Olympian Natalie Cook, delivered a very clear message of dream big and speak that dream into action, with lots of tips along the way.

It was a fabulous week of celebrating, engaging in learning, meeting new people and showing how it feels to belong to a Learning City!

Building Better Regions Fund (Round 5)

The Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon Barnaby Joyce MP, Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development has recently announced the projects to be funded under Round Five of the Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF).

An additional $100 million has been committed on top of the $200 million initially announced to support 298 local infrastructure and community projects under the fifth round of the Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF).

Go Pink Fundraiser

Chair RDA Ipswich & West Moreton Cr Janice Holstein and RDAIWM Committee Member and CEO Ipswich Hospital Foundation James Sturges launched the Go Pink fund raising event in Gatton.

Go Pink is to fund specialised equipment for breast cancer care at West Moreton Health. These much-needed funds is for equipment like mobile stereotaxic chairs.

These specialised chairs can help get women and patients into the correct, comfortable, and safe position during mammography screenings and stereotaxic breast biopsy procedures.

Brisbane Valley Rail Trail

The Brisbane Valley Rail Trail is only twenty minutes from Kilcoy at Moore. Our Northern and Eastern visitors are taking adventure of the bush trails from the Sunshine Coast to Jimna and onto the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail giving an economic boost to our local economy.

A local artist Ross Holloway has been busy at the a Kilcoy service station producing an amazing mural depicting the wonder of country life.

The Strategic Plan is desired to be a resource document used by federal, state and local government to place emphasis on the infrastructure needs of the Ipswich & West Moreton region.

One hundred TAFE Queensland scholarships on offer

TAFE Queensland is awarding up to 100 scholarships to Queenslanders looking to change their lives and build lifelong careers.
Minister for Training and Skills Development Di Farmer said applications for the scholarships open today, with recipients receiving up to $5,000 to study any TAFE Queensland qualification from a certificate III through to advanced diplomas and bachelor’s degrees.

Laidley Cultural Centre Auditorium Acoustic Improvements

During a tour of the Lockyer Valley, RDAIWM Chair Cr Janice Holstein and Scott Buchholz MP Federal Member for Wright visited the Laidley Cultural Centre Auditorium which is scheduled to undergo some maintenance for improvements from 19 April 2021 through to 28 May 2021.
