A place for reflection, remembrance and healing

Friday 19 June 2026, RDA Ipswich & West Moreton CEO Rees Banks joined community members at Queens Park, Ipswich for the opening of the new Ceremonial Healing and Remembrance Place – a significant space acknowledging the history and cultural importance of this area for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The dedicated space honours Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander servicemen and servicewomen who have lost their lives in conflicts throughout history, including inter-clan conflicts, the frontier wars and world wars. It provides a place for reflection, education and healing for current and future generations.

The ceremony was made even more special through powerful cultural performances and the involvement of local school students, highlighting the importance of sharing stories, fostering understanding and ensuring these histories continue to be remembered.

A moving address was delivered by First Nations veteran Aunty Lorraine Hatton OAM, the first Aboriginal female Warrant Officer in the Australian Army, whose reflections reinforced the significance of recognising and honouring service and sacrifice.

This new space stands as an important addition to Ipswich – a place where the whole community can come together to reflect, learn and remember.
