Exploring New Ways to Share Energy for Regional Growth

Early September, Rees Banks met with energy specialist Ashley Bland to present project findings from the Regional Energy Transition Collaborative at the Smart Energy Solutions Conference in Brisbane.

Envisioned under the theme “keep energy local,” the project explored how communities can generate and share energy seamlessly by coordinating efforts within the same distribution network. For RDA Ipswich & West Moreton (RDAIWM), the focus is on how such initiatives can drive regional development and create stronger, more resilient communities.

The research identified both the social drivers and technical requirements needed to successfully implement different models of community energy sharing. Three models were proposed—small, medium, and large—each designed for further exploration and potential adoption.

The key takeaway: there are exciting new ways to share energy that could benefit individuals, networks, and entire communities—but success relies on effective coordination.
