Support for Small Businesses to Take on Apprentices Highlighted During Small Business Month

Queensland small businesses are being encouraged to consider hiring apprentices and trainees this Small Business Month, with a range of financial incentives, tools and support now available to make it more accessible than ever.

Programs delivered through Business Queensland are helping to reduce the cost and complexity of taking on new staff, particularly for small businesses looking to grow their workforce and build long-term capability.

Among the key initiatives is the Small Business Apprenticeship Pilot Program, which offers eligible employers wage subsidies of up to 50 per cent for first and second year apprentices. The program aims to ease cost pressures during the early stages of training while supporting skills development across priority industries.

In addition to wage support, employers may also be eligible for a range of other incentives, including payroll tax rebates, training subsidies and employer support payments. These measures are designed to make it easier for businesses to invest in training while maintaining productivity.

To complement financial assistance, the Queensland Government also provides a suite of free tools and resources to guide employers through the process of recruiting, onboarding and supporting apprentices and trainees. These resources are designed to help businesses maximise the benefits of apprenticeships while ensuring a positive experience for both employers and employees.

Private sector opportunities are also available, with BizCover currently offering its Tools for the Trade Grant. The grant provides funding support for tradies to purchase essential equipment, helping to reduce upfront costs and improve business capability.

Regional development organisations are highlighting the importance of apprenticeships as a long-term investment in both individual businesses and the broader economy. By building a skilled local workforce, small businesses play a critical role in supporting industry growth and strengthening regional communities.

With strong support now available, Small Business Month presents an ideal opportunity for employers to explore how apprenticeships and traineeships can contribute to their future success.
